The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management (NREM), at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) invites applicants for a tenure track position in coastal fisheries management and policy at the Assistant Professor level to begin January 1, 2024.

The department seeks candidates whose teaching, research and scholarship will be centered on subtropical and tropical fisheries of the Pacific. This position is part of a series of coordinated hires across multiple schools and colleges at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM).  Island nations across the Pacific are faced with increasing challenges in managing Coastal and Marine resources stemming from globalization, growing demand, changes in governance systems, and climate change. A broad understanding of the ecological, social, cultural, economic, governance, and policy dimensions of these often data-poor fisheries is required to develop creative and effective management strategies and policy options that can ensure the longevity of fisheries and the benefits they provide to people.

Initial positions at UHM are in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management (NREM), the Oceanography Department, the Sea Grant College Program, and the Center for Pacific Island Studies to address the sustainability of tropical island and ocean fisheries. In addition to research activities, all four faculty will be expected to contribute to the creation and instruction of a new accredited graduate degree in fisheries to serve the needs of Hawai‘i and the Pacific region. It is envisioned that this program will have multiple tracks to accommodate foci in both the natural and social science components of the field. This position within NREM will focus on decision science that supports the management and policy of coastal fisheries, both commercial and non-commercial, within interconnected land-sea, human-natural systems.

The department seeks a candidate who will expand the expertise of the department and integrate undergraduate and graduate education with cutting-edge research that serves the needs of the people of Hawaii and the Pacific Island region. The successful qualified candidate will have research expertise in stock assessment, decision science and/or risk analysis with a specific focus on policy analysis and management of coastal fisheries, which can include targeted, invasive, and/or threatened fish populations and other environmental challenges of federal, state, and community resource managers. The research program developed by the successful candidate will emphasize decision-making, quantitative modeling to evaluate consequences and trade-offs of potential management actions, and/or stock assessment with the aim of generating results with clear and tangible benefits to resource management agencies. Qualified candidates shall possess strong teaching and mentoring skills that enrich the department’s undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and also possess a strong desire to collaborate across the University of Hawai‘i System to build and grow a world-class fisheries science graduate program.

The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa (UHM) is an indigenous-serving institution with a commitment to becoming a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning.
