About the Hui Makaʻāinana O Makana:
Formed in 1999, the Hui is a non-profit organization dedicated to perpetuating and teaching the skills, knowledge, and practices of our kupuna through the interpretation, restoration, care and protection of the natural and cultural resources within the Hāʻena State Park (HSP). The non-profit was formed and is managed by the lineal descendants of that area.
In 2015, Hāʻena became the first Community-based Subsistence Fishing Area (CBSFA) to have rules approved by the State covering 3.5 miles of coastline in order to sustain the resources that support traditional and customary fishing practices. The Hui is in a partnership agreement with DLNR, State Parks Division to manage 15 acres of Hāʻena State Park, that encompasses traditional and restored loʻi, along with other wahi pana and wahi kapu areas within the park. In addition, the Hui partners with The Hanalei Initiative to operate the parking, entry and shuttle operations for HSP. The Hui works in close partnership with Limahuli Gardens to provide a true ahupuaʻa wide stewardship program “ridge to reef”. We infuse our traditional cultural knowledge and values through multi-faceted aina-based education programs.
