The Division of Forestry and Wildlife protects, manages, and restores natural and cultural resources in collaboration with the people of Hawaiʻi. E mālama kākou i ka ‘āina! We offer a number of online resources for teachers, including lesson plans, classroom guest speakers, and online education resources for your students to explore. Our online resources include videos, StoryMaps, virtual field trips, and profiles of the species, places, and people we work with. Opportunity Description:

The Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife is pleased to offer guest speakers for classrooms on an ongoing basis. We can provide guest speakers virtually or potentially in person as circumstances allow. Our staff work in a number of areas that may be of interest to students, including:

  • Forest management and wood products
  • Forest health
  • Wildfire management and wildland firefighting (including Smokey the Bear programs)
  • Trails management through Nā Ala Hele
  • Native ecosystems and conservation fieldwork
  • Watershed ecology and management
  • Rare plants, rare snails, and native invertebrates
  • Invasive species management
  • Hunting and game management
  • Wildlife management
  • Native seabirds and native forest birds
  • Policy and public engagement with regard to natural resources

For classroom visits on Oʻahu, we can also provide a visit from our mascot Pono the Nēnē, who encourages students to engage responsibly with natural resources in Hawaiʻi.
