INVASIVE ANT EXTENSION SPECIALIST – ID# 224663.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Hawai‘i Ant Lab (HAL), located in Hilo, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $5,286.68 - $5,498.84/Mon. 

DUTIES:  The program’s mission is to protect agriculture, people and the environment of Hawai‘i from the introduction of new invasive ants, prevent or reduce the spread of existing ant species and to eradicate infestations where this is feasible.  Accomplishes this by working as part of a small team to manage impacts associated with the threat of invasive ants and promote regional biosecurity collaboration.  Oversees activities related to the invasive ant extension strategy for Hawai‘i, conducts surveys for invasive ants and participates in research activities. Develops and updates the HAL extension and outreach plan for invasive ants. Identifies specimens collected as a result of surveys and from samples submitted by the public and other agencies.  Coordinates implementation of community based eradication and mitigation plans.  Collects data on efficiency and post treatment monitoring of operational plans.   Participates in ant data collection efforts and enters data into appropriate databases.  Prepares and delivers training programs for public, industry and agency stakeholders. Drives to project sites. Prepares progress and project reports for extension and outreach grants.  Assists the Invasive Ant Research Manager with major milestone reports and grant applications.  Participates in management of the littlefireants.com website.  Expected outcomes of the program include enhanced awareness of invasive ant issues and development of new and novel solutions to control the invasive species for people, industry and natural resource managers. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Entomology, Agriculture, Zoology, or a related Natural Sciences field.
EXPERIENCE
Five to seven (5-7) years of experience in a natural resources or extension environment.
KNOWLEDGE
Proficient knowledge of extension and outreach methodologies, invasive species and conservation issues in Hawai‘i, specifically invasive ants.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
Must have good oral and written communication skills.  Must possess well-developed computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, citation management, cloud-based collaboration software and database management. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in small teams and foster teamwork with a wide range of people. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to conduct field work in remote locations under adverse conditions as needed.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

Certified pest control applicator (Category 9 or 10). Ability to identify Hawai‘i ant species.
