With an elevation ranging from about 2500 feet to 8700 feet, the program manages for 26 threatened and endangered spcies and includes a portion of one of the last remaining sub-alpine tropical dryland forest in the world.

An Invasive Plants Ecologist position is available with the Colorado State University and Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands to be located at the US Army Garrison, Pohakuloa Training Area (USAG-PTA) on the Big Island in Hawaii. The work location is approximately 40 miles west of Hilo, HI. The position supports the botanical program at USAG-PTA within the Natural Resources Program.
The botanical program manages botanical resources including managing invasive plant species and coordinating invasive species prevention activities, thus reducing stressors on sensitive resources on Army-managed lands while supporting sustained military training at Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA).
The employee:
Supervises and leads a team of 8-10 staff to implement a wide variety of activities in the field to manage invasive plant species, including surveys, monitoring, threat management and restoration activities. Develops quarterly and annual work schedules for self and staff to meet established management metrics.
Supports planning and reporting activities including data management and analysis, technical report preparation, public outreach, and other duties.
Oversees maintenance of vegetative fuels, mostly invasive species, along an established systems of fuel breaks to meet established standards. Develops and supports implementation of strategies and approaches to minimize impacts from wildfires to threatened and endangered plants.
Oversees the early detection program for invasive plants and uses frameworks to evaluate and prioritize invasive plant species present at, or newly introduced to, PTA.
Develops management plans for each invasive plant including control targets and timelines. Collects and analyzes data to report progress toward control targets.
Is supervised by the Natural Resource Program Botanical Program Manager.
Coordinates and collaborates with other natural resources support staff at PTA and federal biologists.
The position is contingent upon funding for continued CSU support for natural resource management on PTA.

Required Qualifications:
• BS in ecology, botany, range science, natural resource management, restoration ecology, biology, or closely related field.
• Two or more years of experience with adaptive management of invasive plant species (e.g., using survey and monitoring data, etc.)
• Three or more years of experience with using chemicals to control vegetation.
• Experience with data management, analysis, and technical writing.
• Experience with plant identification including invasive species and native species.
• Experience supervising staff.
• Basic proficiency with ArcGIS, including data entry, management, and display and map creation.
• Experience with Global Positioning System (GPS) and field navigation.
• Proficient with Windows-based computers and MS Office Suite software including MSWord and MSExcel for data management, record keeping, information retrieval, and reporting.
• Experience conducting field work, including hiking long distances carrying a field pack over rough terrain.
• Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
• The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
