MKWP NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT TECHNICIAN – ID# 224686.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Mauna Kahālāwai Watershed Partnership (MKWP), located in Maui, Hawai‛i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY:  $4,536/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Under the guidance of the Mauna Kahālāwai Watershed Partnership (MKWP) Program Manager and in collaboration with the MKWP Natural Resource Management (NRM)/Operations Manager, plans and conducts projects to implement the MKWP Watershed Management Plan and address landscape level watershed threats from feral ungulates while also supporting other MKWP programs. Works as part of a team to serve the MKWP mission to reverse the negative trend of forest degradation caused by threats such as invasive species, human impacts, and wildfire. MKWP’s goal is to protect our forested watersheds, native ecosystems, and freshwater supply through collaborative forest management. Develops and implements plans for ungulate control to protect the nearly 50,000-acre MKWP management area. Plans and leads field activities related to animal control, scouts/surveys, and transect monitoring, including testing and identifying successful methods for ungulate control. Acts as primary liaison between program and land managers/land owners, and hunters. Assists in the training of field crew and temporary hires in all aspects of the MKWP operations. Records detailed field data and summarizes and coordinates data analysis using various computer programs. Supports NRM Supervisors by serving as a senior member of the field crew in other natural resource programs including but not limited to fencing, weed control, and monitoring.   May lead crew in the absence of the NRM Supervisors. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION
At least two (2) years of college level coursework from an accredited college or university in Natural Resource Management, Biological Science, or Environmental Science with basic/related biology/natural resources courses. (High School Diploma or G.E.D equivalent and at least four (4) years of related natural resources/conservation experience may substitute for college level coursework.).
EXPERIENCE
Two to four (2-4) years of work experience with biological resources, conservation planning, or natural resource management. At least one (1) year of supervisory or professional leadership experience. Experience must be paid and well-documented (include dates and hours/week).
KNOWLEDGE
Working knowledge of the principles of ecology and conservation, specifically related to invasive game mammals. Strong working knowledge of and expertise in field work techniques, logistical planning, data collection/management, and ecosystem monitoring protocols. Knowledge of watershed and island ecosystem processes, including incipient alien plant and animal invasions.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
Must have ability to detect feral ungulate individuals and populations and plan and implement appropriate control strategies. Must be proficient in ArcGIS and GPS (Garmin, Trimble, LocusPro). Ability to collect detailed field data, organize, analyze, and summarize data, and write clear and concise reports. Capable of creating maps for use in reports, presentations, and field activities. Ability to communicate orally and in writing and to issue and comprehend complex verbal and written instructions. Ability to use databases (MS Access) and other Microsoft Office software. Ability to read topographic maps, aerial photographs, and use a compass. Ability to operate power tools including chain saws, weed eaters, post pounders, generators, chipper, etc. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) and external load training (A219) within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete rappelling training within twelve (12) months from date of hire. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certificating agency. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
Several job functions will take place in remote areas, and require travel by foot and/or helicopter in/out of remote camp locations for periods of one to four (1-4) nights in inclement weather and rough terrain. Cross-country foot travel and helicopter travel will often be required to complete monitoring, surveys, and control work. Must not be acrophobic (afraid of heights). Rappelling may be necessary for control work at selected sites. Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions at high elevations (up to 5,788 feet), for up to four (4) consecutive days. Ability to backpack, lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted.
POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in Wildlife/Game Management or related field. Field experience in a resource management program to protect at risk ecosystems in Hawai‘i, with emphasis on alien plant and animal control and conducting biological surveys. Knowledge of Hawaiian biota and threats from incipient plant and animal invasions. Knowledge of safe and effective herbicide use and weed and ungulate control techniques. Familiarity with watersheds on Maui.
