Regular, Part-Time (50% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Mauna Kahalawai Watershed Partnership (MKWP), located in Wailuku/Lahaina Districts with offices in Lahaina, located in Maui, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY:  Salary commensurate with qualifications.

DUTIES:  Leads public education and outreach efforts, works with MKWP Program Manager to raise public awareness about watershed protection and restoration activities. Conducts school and private group outreach presentations, develops cultural and biological talking points for public events, develops displays and outreach materials, organizes and leads volunteer trips and encourages favorable public relations of Mauna Kahalawai Watershed Partnership (MKWP) natural resource management and restoration objectives. Interacts with media, community organizations, schools, volunteers, civic leaders and local cultural and community groups. Assists MKWP Program Coordinator and Manager as needed in working with funding agencies to identify and obtain financial support for projects. Assists in the preparation of reports, prepares publications, press releases and other public outreach documents. Maintains MKWP website and social media accounts. Occasionally serves as a field crewmember building and maintaining fence lines, controlling feral animal populations, locating and controlling alien plant invasions using mechanical and chemical means, and monitoring native vegetation/ecosystem recovery. Drives project vehicles to conduct fence monitoring, construction, repair, feral animal control, and alien plan control tasks. Work will focus on the protection of the native Hawaiian forest and related water resources within approximately 50,000 acres of forested watershed in the West Maui Mountains. Fieldwork requires working with herbicides, working in and around helicopters, and occasional rappelling. Performs other duties as assigned, including office management support as requested by MKWP Program Manager. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION
Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in Biology, Education, Hawaiian Studies, Natural Resources, or related field.

EXPERIENCE
One to three (1-3) years of experience working in an environmental outreach position. Experience working with students ages twelve to eighteen (12-18).

KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of biology and Hawaiian natural history. Knowledge of native plant restoration techniques. Knowledge of natural and cultural history. Solid understanding of effective communication and how to develop websites, press releases, brochures, and presentations. Considerable knowledge of word processing and desktop publishing software including MS Office programs (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) and Adobe graphic design programs (InDesign, Photoshop).

ABILITIES & SKILLS
Ability to learn to recognize and correctly identify plant species. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Proficient in word processing and spreadsheet computer applications, Internet use and familiar with Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), website development and graphic design programs. Aptitude to learn ARCView and database applications. Ability to use a compass, map, and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) hand-held units. Ability to input field data into a computer, analyze field data using database and spreadsheet programs and prepare draft reports. Able to apply herbicides. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A-100) within six (6) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete rappelling training within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months. 

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
Must not be acrophobic (afraid of heights). Must be able to fly by helicopter to remote locations, hike, and rappel on or near vertical terrain that could change up to 5,788 feet in a day. Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions at high elevations (up to 6,000 feet), for up to seven (7) consecutive days. Ability to backpack, lift, and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Ability to carry loads up to forty (40) pounds unassisted and hike for long distances. Ability to camp in remote areas for four to five (4-5) days a week.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

Knowledgeable of Hawaiian language. Skilled in native plant and animal identification. Experience outplanting and monitoring native plants. Fieldwork related to natural resources management and conservation biology, with emphasis on monitoring and management of native and non-native plants in Hawai‘i. Knowledge of endangered species in Hawai‘i. Experience in identification of native Hawaiian plants and non-native plants. Experience in using Global Information Systems (GIS). Knowledge and experience with PCSU and/or RCUH policies and procedures. Experience working in an office to support and promote biological field activities.
