Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), Natural Resources/Ecosystem Restoration (NR/ER), Native Ecosystem Protection and Management (NEPM) Section, based in Pearl City, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $4,220/Mon.
DUTIES: Conducts a broad spectrum of native ecosystem protection and management activities on the Island of Oahu. Tasks include, but are not limited to, designing, evaluating and implementing weed control, habitat restoration, and environmental education initiatives. Work involves manual, chemical, and mechanical (e.g., weedwhacker) control of non-native plants; vegetation monitoring; seed collection; propagation and outplanting native plants throughout the Oahu Natural Area Reserves (NARS), as well as other managed lands, and presenting environmental outreach messages to the public. Leads field assistants, volunteers and interns on work assignments. Drives to various work sites, using a 4WD vehicle to access remote areas. Projects will be related to outreach and education (e.g., signage, social media posts, handouts and group tours) and other critical items related to the Oahu Native Ecosystem Protection and Management (NEPM) Mission. Tracks and reports field actions on a regular basis. Data collection and reporting will require the use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographic Information System Mapping (ArcGIS), field notes, photographs, aerial surveys, and Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc.). Performs maintenance on field equipment, vehicles, and infrastructure (e.g., fences, land zones, trails, and baseyards). Tracks supplies and equipment inventories, and gives notification to supervisor when additional items will be required. Assists with annual reporting, conducting invasive species life history and management research. Assists with related purchasing. Assists in developing plans, coordination of equipment labor and materials, onsite implementation, and reporting on project status. Work environment is in remote mountainous conditions sometimes requiring helicopter travel and long irregular hours. Work is primarily located on the island of Oahu, but may occasionally take place on other islands. Must be able to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university. (Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in related field and an additional two (2) years of equivalent work or field experience in management of Hawaiian flora or fauna, or a High School Diploma and an additional five (5) years of equivalent work or field experience in management of Hawaiian flora or fauna may substitute for a Bachelor’s degree).
EXPERIENCE
Two to four (2-4) years of experience in work related to natural resource management.
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora, fauna, and threats from alien species. Working knowledge of weed control techniques and tools, including familiarity with pesticides. Knowledge of ecosystem restoration strategies and practices utilized in Hawai‘i. Knowledge of wildlife control techniques.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
Must be willing and able to work with and around pesticides. Ability to use compass, map, and GPS hand-held units. Ability to input field data into a computer using database and spreadsheet programs. Ability to communicate well orally and in writing. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
Ability to camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions for up to five (5) consecutive days. Ability to hike up to ten (10) miles on irregular terrain with backpacks weighing up to forty (40) pounds unassisted.
POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resource Management or closely related field. At least one (1) year of direct natural resource management experience in Hawai‘i. Previous experience working with NEPM. Experience in identification of native Hawaiian plants and animals, and non-native plants.
